Richard K. Templeton, President and CEO of the Dallas, TX based chipmaker Texas Instruments (TI) Inc, (NYSE:TXN) expects India to be a leading player in the new era of communications and entertainment. There is promise with 250 million telephone subscribers in India by the year 2007. For realization of TV-on-your-mobile, the company will work on the broadcasting method—Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld.

Multiplexes may soon go digital, with movies transferred over broadband minutes before it begins. The company is in talks with Bollywood on these lines, said Biswadip Mitra, MD, TI.

Templeton also addressed a select gathering of semiconductor CEOs on the subject ‘India–The Next Market Opportunity’ at the India Semiconductor Association’s (ISA), Thought Leadership Forum. According to Templeton, 800 million mobile phones were sold globally last year, which was four times more than PC sales. Clearly, mobile phones will drive the semiconductor market.

“The $28 billion electronic market in India, growing at 30 percent, will be $360 billion in ten years. This will drive the Indian semiconductor industry,” he added.
