He was responsible for the growth and outstanding success of Hughes Software Systems (HSS), and oversaw its smooth transition to Flextronics Software Systems. He also held the office of Chairman for NASSCOM during 2002-03, and in addition to strengthening India’s leadership position globally, he played a key role in establishing India’s credibility amidst the backlash against outsourcing.

Kumar was an active member of the Governing Council of the Informatics and Communication group of the University of Delhi and was also the Chairman of the Telecommunications Group of the American Business Council.
Kumar was honored with the coveted Hughes Chairman’s Award of excellence in May 2000. He was also nominated for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in September the same year.

Kumar headed the West Coast operations for Hughes Network Systems based in San Diego, U.S. and was involved in the development of the first VSAT and cellular telephony system before coming to India in 1995.
The industry will fondly remember him as one of the finest leaders who made immense contributions through various roles he played. A wonderful personality, with a good sense of humor, a keen golfer and a true entrepreneur, he inspired others around him to reach new heights. He is survived by his wife Amita and son Kunal.
