‘Opensource the virus mechanisms’, is the new chant of the cybercrooks. The virus makers are on ingress to strengthen the cyberfraud market, making the viral codes open source. The enthusiasm may turn a gaffe with open sourced codes being accessible to all including the cyber security chiefs.

The Trojan masters can ping new updates on old Trojans in the open source platform, exploiting avenues to make the viruses more strong. A cryptography expert can add a cryptographic plug-in or a video streaming expert can add features to remotely stream a desktop. The move, to boost the open sourced malware market which is currently, 10 percent, would lead to the re-emergence of outdated backdoor trojans like the Limbo Trojan, popularly known for its information theft feature. The Trojan lost its glamour, after the release of the more dreadful Zeus Trojan. The opensource platform will aid the Trojans, which accounts for 70 percent of the malwares present, to evolve with better methods to undetectably infect PCs and mobiles. The current Trojans, who masks itself as a legitimate security update, has led to an increase of Trojan infections from 613 in August 2008 to 19,102 in August 2009.

These seeming threats from open sourced codes may not occur as cyber guards like Symantec, McAfee would also have an access to the nefarious code, making it easier for them modify their security softwares. The easy access to the codes may also positively impact the opensource security software market. Currently, the open source anti-virus market though boasts of programs like ClamAV, Snort, and BitDefender, however, even the sites do not guarantee the effectiveness of these anti-viruses, due to irregular updates. The cyber punks relishing the open source capability can awake the security providers to puncture their counter part’s attempts through updates.
