Sony to Launch PlayStation VR in October for $399

BENGALURU: Earlier this week, Andrew House, head of Sony’s gaming division announced that their version of VR headset – PlayStation VR will be launched globally in October 2016. The growing concern towards virtual reality has led several hardware companies to introduce their adaptation of this technology, reports Tech2.

The major advantage of Sony with PlayStation VR headset is the price tag; the VR headset will be cost only $399 that is lesser than the price of rival headsets such as Oculus Rift. The Oculus Rift VR headset was announced a day before Sony’s PlayStation VR at the Video Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The headset sports a 5.7-inch display with 100 degree field of vision and includes 360 degree head movement tracking. The Sony VR has a latency time of 18 milliseconds between the user’s head movement and the right image projected on the display.

House said that Sony’s strategy is to provide low cost virtual headset that will result in customers for easy adaptation of the device. “We firmly believe getting the price right is crucial to driving consumer adoption of any new technology,” he added.

The Sony’s headset will cost $399 and it is $200 less than Facebook owned Oculus Rift. However, both the devices are equally good. While Oculus Rift is for third party gaming console, PlayStation VR is for Sony’s own PlayStation gaming console.

The Senior Vice President of sales and marketing, Ubisoft – a well known game developer, Tony Key said a team of more than 230 developers are working on contents for PlayStation VR and more than 50 games are expected to be developed by the time of PlayStation VR’s launch. Players can download the Playroom VR at the PlayStation store and can play six games for free.

The most anticipated Star Wars Battlefront game will be exclusively available on PlayStation VR, as the company has associated with game development companies such as EA Sports and Lucasfilm.
