Why Life Insurers Shun HIV Positives In India?
Most often, when people buy insurance policies they really don’t go through the terms and conditions that run across 20 pages, probably. This leads to not being aware of the exclusions that would be buried on page 12 or 13 or 14 of your policy. It claims that “the company will not pay for any condition directly or indirectly caused by or associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus or Variant/mutant viruses and or any syndrome or condition of a similar kind commonly referred to as AIDS."
A ‘Times of India’ report that was published on 2 Feb 2011 notes that, "Currently, HIV is excluded from all insurance policies available in the country 'violating the national mandate of providing stigma-free care and support services'." More often than not, insurance agents are unaware of this exclusion, says Sanjiv, a member of the MSM (men who have sex with men) community in New Delhi, who sold insurance for "a few months". "Kahaan training dete hain (What training do we get as agents), sales targets are everything," he says.
