- Focus on price trends for general goods and specific product groups over the next 3 months and 1 year.
- Open online participation available for the public, results to guide monetary policy decisions.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has started the September 2025 round of its Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH), inviting people from across 19 cities to share their views on price changes and inflation in the country.
The IESH is conducted every quarter and helps the central bank understand how households perceive changes in the cost of living. It collects feedback on both general price levels and prices of specific product groups. The survey asks households about their views on price movements for the coming three months and one year, as well as their estimate of current and future inflation rates. These insights play a key role in shaping RBI’s monetary policy decisions.
The 19 cities chosen for the survey include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, and Thiruvananthapuram. These cities represent diverse consumer patterns across different regions of India.
For this round, the RBI has engaged a Mumbai-based agency to conduct the survey. Representatives of this agency will directly approach selected households in the listed cities to record their responses.
At the same time, the survey has also been opened online for wider public participation. People who are not directly contacted by the agency can still contribute by filling out the survey form available on the RBI website. The central bank stressed that such public input is very important in understanding how citizens experience changes in everyday expenses from food and fuel to other essential goods and services.
By gathering these responses, the RBI aims to get a clearer picture of inflation expectations at the household level. The findings of the September 2025 survey will be published on the RBI’s official platforms.
