Micro Finance Staff Seize House in Alnavar

In short

  • In Kadabagatti village, employees of Jana Small Finance Bank forcibly evicted a family by microfinance institutions.
  • The family, who had taken loans totalling Rs 17 lakh, protested the seizure of their home, which was not collateral for the loans.
  • Local leaders from the Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha intervened, allowing the family to return home.

Though the State government has warned micro finance institutions from harassing loanees by issuing an Ordinance to check it, a case of employees of a micro finance institution taking away the residence of a loanee and forcing the family members, which include an ill person and a woman carrying her three-month-old baby, onto the road has surfaced in Kadabagatti village of Alnavar taluk in Dharwad district.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon when Jana Small Finance Bank staff took possession of the house belonging to Siddappa Hosamani in Kadabagatti village.

While the loanees Santosh Hosamani and Arjun Hosamani, who have taken two loans, protested the taking possession of the house they had not given as collateral, the staff are said to have instructed them to leave the house stating that they are acting according to a court order.

As per district president of Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha (KRRS) Raviraj Kambali, Arjun Hosamani and Santosh Hosamani had availed two loans of Rs 7 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, and the sum with interest has now reached more than Rs 30 lakh. The micro finance employees attached the house belonging to Siddappa Hosamani and excluded the houses which were pledged for the loan, he added.

The family includes a paralysed elderly person and a woman who has a three-month-old child.

He stated that they went to the village in the evening after the problem came to their notice, and along with KRRS local office-bearers Ravi Waddar, Manjunath Chandanamatti, Ravi Hampannavar and Suresh Hosamani, they assisted the people there.

KRRS State president Chukki Nanjundaswamy addressed them over phone and according to her instruction, they broke open the locks and let the family return to their house, he added.

Mr. Kambali explained that in addition to the family members they will be submitting a complaint at the Alnavar Police on Friday for harassment. He added that despite local KRRS leaders earlier raising a few instances of harassment of this sort, no action has been initiated by the taluk administration.
