Who needs to file returns

If the income for the year exceeds the basic exemption, then one has to file returns. Last year, the CBDT exempted salaried people with up to 5 lakh of annual income, provided their taxes were paid. Senior citizens were also given a similar exemption. One should file returns as it comes in handy while applying for a loan or going abroad. File your return if you are a -

a) Male with an income of over Rs 1.8 lakh a year.

b) Female with an income of over Rs 1.9 lakh a year.

c) Senior citizen with an income of over Rs 2.5 lakh a year.

d) Very senior citizen with an income of over Rs 5 lakh a year.
