Change in Service Tax to Burn Your Wallets

Bangalore: The changed service tax regime is a new issue to worry about along with the ever increasing hike, reports Tina Edwin from ET Bureau. This change has started effectively from July1, 2012 which implies that all services which a common man uses will be subjected to 12 percent service tax.

The Finance Ministry has kept 38 services under the negative list which will be exempt from taxation. ‘As per the negative list, services like metered taxis, autorickshaws, betting, gambling, lottery, entry to amusement parks, transport of goods or passengers and electricity transmission or distribution by discoms will not come under the service tax net.

Other important services which will not attract the tax include funeral, burial, mutate services and transport of deceased. Coaching classes and training institutions will come under the net, though the tax will not be levied on school, university education and approved vocational courses. ET Magazine has brought down the following list of new services on which you will end up paying taxes.

1) Speed Posts, Express Parcels

Private couriers were applicable to service tax since 1996 but speed post and express parcel service of the post office were excluded from this clause. But now under this change in service tax, the later is not spared. Life insurance and premium postal services provided by the post office will attract 12 percent service tax. But some services like postal services, savings accounts, money orders, pension payments etc. are exempted under this change.
