Sun simplifies developing Java programs on mobile phones
Bangalore: Software developers, who were finding it hard to deliver Java programs on a mobile phone, can breathe a sigh of relief with a new tool from Sun Microsystems. Claimed to be easier and cheaper, the new open-source testing tools were launched at Sun's annual JavaOne developer conference in San Francisco. Sun has partnered with Orange, Vodafone Group and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, in this endeavor. A software developer needs to undertake a lot of testing before the program can reach a large audience, because different network operators have different requirements that are sold to various devices. These tests are expensive as a single test costs $200 and this can go up depending on the program. "Nobody likes testing," said Martin Wrigley, Director of technology with Orange's partner program. The new tool is part of Sun's initiative to simplify the process and reduce the number of tests, which a software developer has to run to make sure that the programs can run on different platforms without any glitches. The company also said that they were enhancing the five year old Java Verified program used to certify Java ME programs on mobile devices. Emergence of Apple's iPhone and Google's Android has eclipsed the Java on mobile phones. With this new initiative unveiled for the developers, Sun hopes to reclaim lost ground.
