Singur plant to roll out Nano by October

Kolkata: The Singur plant of Tata Motors will roll out the Nano, the world's cheapest car, by October this year, company managing director Ravi Kant said Wednesday.
Ravi Kant visited the plant site, about 40 km from here in Hooghly district, and expressed his satisfaction with the progress of work.
"We hope to have a trial run of the car from the Singur factory by June-July this year. We hope by the middle of the next financial year (2008-09), around September-October 2008, the plant would start commercial production," Ravi Kant said at Singur.
"The plant's equipment will start arriving soon and an action plan is being worked out to complete the work on schedule," he said.
Nano, the 
100,000 ($2,500), 623 cc car with a 33 horsepower multipoint fuel injection petrol engine, was unveiled at Auto Expo 2008 in New Delhi Jan 10 in a blaze of glory as the company put behind the violent protests over acquisition of about 997 acres land from people in Singur.
The civil society, local farmers and West Bengal's main opposition Trinamool Congress, the rival of the ruling Communists, had unleashed a violent protest over the process of land acquisition in Singur since the middle of 2006.
However, the company got a breather when the Calcutta High Court said in a recent judgement that the land acquisition was done with a social purpose and in keeping with proper methodology to help generate employment in the area.
The company said it will initially produce about 250,000 Nanos and expects an eventual annual demand of one million cars.
