Will Delhi Gang Rape Impact Tourism in India?

Gour Kanjilal, the executive director of the Indian Association of Tour Operators said, “Some tourists have e-mailed in asking whether it would be safe to travel, but no one has said that they have changed their mind about traveling to India,” as reported by New York Times.

Speaking of no cancellations and safety concerns Parikshat Laxminarayan, managing director and co-founder of the tour agency Enchanting India said, “We believe that India is still among the safest countries in the world for men and women and especially for travelers.”

As a routine recommendation travel agencies do offer safety measures for female tourists to India. Kanjilal informed that the tour operators always provide information to female travelers to be vigilant and visit tourist spots within certain hours in the country.

Since the Delhi gang rape there has been some inquiries from clients in the U.S. and Europe regarding safety informed Arun Varma, the chief executive at Prime Travels. He said, “We issue, as part of our standard operating procedures, an advisory to clients not to have ladies travel alone late nights or venture out to areas that are not part of the itinerary unless accompanied by a male friend or a local trustworthy contact,” as reported by New York Times.
