UIDAI Partners CIA Funded MongoDB To Institute Aadhaar

A high level executive of UIDAI confirmed that the deal was signed between the two parties and that the company's database software has already been deployed for analyzing the pace of new registrations. It is not evident whether MongoDB is directly connected with UID or is just a vendor relationship with one of the system integrators that UID works with. However the disclosure of Edward Snowden about U.S. intelligence agencies constantly interrupting communication in Europe and Asia, including in India has raised concerns.

"The risk exposure because of CIA involvement (could be that) if MongoDB is a data controller, then secret courts and secret court orders could be used to get access to the UID data," said Sunil Abraham, executive director at the Centre for Internet and Society. He also added that even if UIDAI is only using the source code without getting into a commercial relationship with MongoDB, they should check thoroughly the source code to check if CIA has placed any back doors. MongoDB is also funded by Intel Capital, Salesforce, Red Hat and Sequoia.
