Top 4 Tech Trends in IT Disaster Recovery

#2. Virtualization:

In recent years, Server Virtualization has been considered as one of the most wanted trends in the technology platform. And so with that now organizations feel that this trend can also be added as a key component in DR strategy.

"Virtualization has the potential to speed up the implementation of a disaster recovery strategy and the actual recovery in case of a disaster," says Ariel Silverstone, an independent information security consultant and former CISO of Expedia. "It also has the ability to make disaster recovery more of an IT function rather than a corporate audit-type function.”

One such example is Teradyne who used virtualization technology from VMware and applied it in their commercial and R&D data centers in the case of disasters. But this kind of implementation also has a downfall. With the popularizing of virtualization, organizations have been implementing this trend so much that it has made DR more complex. Rachel Dines, senior analyst, Infrastructure & Operations, at Forrester Research in Cambridge Mass said that "Because virtual machines are much more portable than physical machines and they can be easily booted on disparate hardware, a lot of companies are using virtualization as a critical piece of their recovery efforts.”
