Most Tragic Rail Accidents in India


June 22, 2001

The Kadalundi train disaster was one of the biggest accidents of the year 2001. Nearly 52 people were killed and hundreds were injured in this accident when four carriages of the Mangalore- Chennai Mail went off-track and fell into the Kadalundi River in the district of Kozhikode, in Kerala. The train was heading for Chennai and was passing through the 140-year old bridge which was in a poor state of repair.

May 12, 2002

The New Delhi- Patna Shramjeevi Express derailed in May 2002, that killed twelve people while passing over a bridge in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. The accident was a result of an act of sabotage that caused derailment of the train. The train was travelling from New Delhi to Patna during the time of high violence between Hindu and Muslim groups in the area.
