Internet For All; Facebook And 6 tech Companies Launch Internet.Org

Internet.org is doing the foot work for the rest of the population to access internet by reducing the cost and amount of data required for most apps and by enabling new business models. Key roles such as development of data compression tools, enhancement of network capabilities for more efficient data handling, building systems to cache data efficiently and creation of frameworks for apps to reduce data usage, will be played by mobile operators.

“There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy. Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges, including making internet access available to those who cannot currently afford it,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook.

JK Shin, CEO and President of the IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics added that “This new initiative has big potential to help accelerate access to the Internet for everyone”. The Internet.org website has the complete list of its partners and also furnishes its missions and goals. “Making the internet available to every person on earth is a goal too large and too important for any one company, group, or government to solve alone. Internet.org’s partners have come together to meet this challenge because they believe in the power of a connected world.” reads the site and urges its viewers to stay tuned for more updates and interviews with technology leaders.
