Indian Cities Go the Detroit Way, Most Municipal Bodies Cash Strapped

For instance, Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India which was once envied by other cities for its beautiful surroundings, roads, and weather is no longer the same since the city has come up with many developmental projects and constructions like the underpasses that are mostly lying incomplete. Many sweepers in the city did not even get their wages as the Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is bankrupt with an outstanding bill standing at Rs 1,300 crore as on 19 of this month. The municipal body has taken loan of more than Rs 3,365 crore. BBMP’s hired Contractors have stopped municipal works in protest.

Even in Bhopal, the civic body is unable to clear off the salaries of their staff. Though the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) funded the municipal corporation, its situation still remains shaky and uncertain.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) too comes up on the list of the cash ridden civic councils.
