India Ranks High On Elder Abuse



Further 60 percent of the elderly consider verbal abuse as elder abuse while more than two fifth (48 percent) feel physical abuse constitutes elder abuse. Verbal abuse was reported more in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore while emotional abuse seems to be more in Bangalore. 22 percent of the elderly were noted to have experienced any type of abuse with the highest being reported in Bangalore (44 percent) followed by Hyderabad (38 percent) and Bhopal (30 percent).

66 percent of the elderly were noted to be financially dependent on others, with highest being reported in Ahmedabad (86 percent) and Mumbai (79 percent). 85 percent of the elderly reported being dependent for medical expenditure while 75 percent for daily living expenditure.

55 percent of the elderly have remittance from children as the main source of income and 35 percent as pension. It was also noted that 81 percent of the elderly are financially dependent on their son and 14 percent on their daughter and 12 percent on daughter-in-law. The average monthly household income of the elderly was recorded to be 6269. About 30 percent of the elderly have a monthly household income in the range of 2501-5000.
