Sirius and XM Radio
Sirius Satellite radio merged with its rival XM Satellite Radio in 2008. The merger had been in the pipeline for a long time. The Federal Finance Commission investigated the impact of a monopoly like situation in the satellite radio arena which would be the result of the merger. The argument from the two companies in favor of the merger was that they would be only be one small player in the audio entertainment market ,competing with other audio services like iPod and Internet radio. The CEO Mel Karmazin stated that the merger would result in the combined unit realizing savings of $400 million in the first year .In 2011, Sirius Canada and XM Canada have also completed their merger. SiriusXM programming is now available through the SiriusXM Internet Radio App on devices like Android, Apple, and BlackBerry smartphones and other connectivity enabled devices. It is the world's largest radio broadcaster measured by revenue. The net subscriber additions were 445,921 in the quarter ended September 30, 2012.  SiriusXM ended the third quarter with a record 23,365,383 subscribers.
