Bangalore School Orders Students To Delete Their Facebook Account

On Tuesday the school sent notices to all parents asking them to compel their children in closing Facebook accounts. The students range from class 1 to class 10. "It is with great concern that we write to you regarding the inappropriate use of Facebook by our students," said the notice. "While the purpose of Facebook is to increase connectivity between people, we have observed that in many cases it does the exact opposite."

The notice mentioned that the lack of parental supervision when children spend lot of time on Facebook, leads to use of abusive language, bullying, making disparaging remarks about teachers and posting comments/confessions to embarrass or hurt a classmate. The notice also expressed concern of the school that the abusive post may lead to some unforeseen situations and that the young children don't have the maturity or the mental equilibrium to use technology in an ethical manner. “Hence, all students of Vidya Niketan from Class 1 to Class 10 will have to close their Facebook accounts with effect from today. We request parents to ensure this. Please help us to enforce this rule as this is in the best interests of our students and we truly care about their emotional safety," the notice added.

Other schools, including Cambridge Public School, Shiksha Sagar High School have expressed similar concern over Facebook use by students, and supporting the move to ban the social networking site for children.
