Athletes Who Gave Their Nation Its Only Gold



John AkII-Bua (Uganda):

This athlete won the gold in 400 meters hurdle in 1972 at the Munich Games. It was Uganda’s first ever and so far only gold at the Olympics. Akii Bua started his athletic career as a hurdler on the short distance. As a police officer, Akii Bua was promoted by the Ugandan President Idi Amin, and given a house, as a reward for his athletic prowess.

Abhinav Bindra (India):

He is an Indian Shooter and is the current World and Olympic Champion in the 10 meter Air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. It was also India’s first gold medal since 1980, when the Men’s Field Hockey won the gold. When the 2010 Commonwealth Games was held in New Delhi, he got the honor of being the Indian contingent’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony. Abhinav has sponsorship tie-ups with Samsung, BSNL and Sahara Group. He is also the brand ambassador of the State-run Steel Authority of India ltd. And is also a member of the federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Sports Committee since 2010.
