Bangalore: Nvidia Corporation has announced that the latest portable media player by Microsoft, the Zune HD is powered by the Nvidia Tegra processor. Zune HD is the first portable media player to combine HD-compatible video, HD radio receiver, full-screen Internet browsing, an organic light emitting diode (OLED) touch screen and Wi-Fi. The confirmation from Nvidia comes after Microsoft recently announced that the device is available for preorder. Nvidia Tegra is a system-on-a-chip (SoC) with an ARM processor developed by Nvidia for devices such as portable media player, smartphones and PDAs. The range currently consists of Tegra APX 2500, Tegra APX 2600, Tegra 600 and Tegra 650 processors. Tegra is a SoC which integrates the CPU, GPU, northbridge, southbridge and memory controller onto a single package. The Zune HD will be one of the first devices in the market to use Tegra processor. "Tegra provides the multimedia muscle in Zune HD," said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of Nvidia's Mobile Business commenting on the capabilities that Tegra offers. The Tegra processor comes with eight individual processors, each designed for a specific task - an HD video processor, an audio processor, a graphics processor and two ARM cores. The processors can work together or independently to minimize power consumption.
