BANGALORE: WorldSpace digital radio is launching a "tonic" in a bid to provide continuing education on latest developments in medical science to doctors in India, the Middle East and other Asian countries. All that a general physician has to do is to acquire a digital receiver of Indian or foreign make, costing upwards of Rs 7,000, and listen to medical experts in audio format, said M.G. Chandrasekhar, executive vice president and chief operating officer (Asia Star) of World Space, at a news conference here. The doctor can otherwise hook the receiver to a personal computer and enter a "virtual classroom" to put questions to an expert on the latest trends in the field of cardiology, oncology, neurology, nephrology, urology, diabetes and other subjects. "Tonic-D," which stands for The ON-air information channel for doctors, would run once a fortnight, initially. Digital audio and multimedia broadcasting company WorldSpace plans to launch the service on October 27 in association with the Sada Sharada Medical Research and Communications (SSMRC). "Our receivers are addressable to one-to-one and one-to-many chats. A nominal fee for accessing this facility will be charged. It is just five per cent of the cost of surfing the Internet," Chandrasekhar said. "We are looking at verticals like financial services to provide commodity and equity markets with a similar facility soon," he said. "Even those who do not have a computer can send their e-mail ID to WorldSpace and the entire information file can be sent to that address," added M. Sebastian, head of business development, WorldSpace India.
