CALIF: Voltaire, developer of routers to connect InfiniBand fabrics with IP infrastructure, said it named John Asher vice president of sales in Europe. Vice President of Marketing Arun Jain said it is the company's first executive position in Europe after it established a footprint there with an office in Geneva six months ago. While Voltaire targets what Jain describes as "the usual suspects," including the U.K., Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain and Russia, Asher's efforts will be concentrated primarily on the U.K. and Russia. The company said IT centers in Europe are increasingly deploying Linux clusters with InfiniBand interconnects. CERN and CEA are two institutions in Europe that use Voltaire products to interconnect high performance clusters. Voltaire will establish a new office in Europe. A specific location has not yet been determined, but Jain said, "the new gentleman is a Brit, so there is a high percent of probability it will be in the U.K." Asher does not join the eight-member board that includes Paul Bonderson, CTO and Chief Engineer at Brocade; Shuki Gleitman, managing partner at Platinum Venture Capital; Ronnie Kenneth, Voltaire CEO; P. Kevin Kilroy, Baker Capital; Ashley Leeds, partner at Baker Capital; Chemi Peres, managing general partner at Pitango Venture Capital; and Moshe Shahaf, managing partner at Vertex Venture Capital. Prior to Voltaire, Asher was vice president of sales for MRV Communications and was responsible for sales in Europe and the Middle East. He has also held sales positions with Optical Access and NBase Communications. Voltaire targets two types of applications: high performance computing and enterprise datacenters. The company launched its product in early 2002. Voltaire has raised approximately $50 million to date, including a $15 million Series D round in March. New investor Vertex Venture Capital and existing investors Baker Capital and Pitango Venture Capital led the round, joined by existing investors Platinum Venture Capital, Tamir Fishman Ventures, and the Challenge Fund. Backers also include Concord Ventures, TechnoPlus Ventures, Hitachi, and Quantum. Voltaire has 70 employees after hiring approximately 10 in sales, marketing and operations this year. Jain expects up to an additional six this year as well as 10 to 12 hires next year.
