NEW DELHI:The government will provide village public telephones in all the remaining 66,822 unconnected villages by November 2007, Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran said today. ''These exclude villages having population of less than 100 in the forest areas and insurgency and naxalite infested areas,'' Maran said during Question Hour. Regarding the waiting list in North East, he said most of it would be cleared by this year end and the entire list by June next year. Maran said the government also planned to introduce WLL on large scale by providing at least one BTS in each short distance charging area (SDCA). In addition, the office of the Administrator Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) had entered into agreements with various operators for providing DELs on demand in rural areas of 1,685 net cost positive SDCAs.
