Lucknow: The state Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) plans to set up malls - designed and operated on the lines of upmarket shopping outlets - exclusively to promote designer khadi products across Uttar Pradesh, an official said here Tuesday. "The reason behind setting up the malls is obvious: promoting and popularising khadi products as being trendy," KVIC state director R.S. Pandey told IANS. About 25 million (2.5 crore) will be spent on every mall. In Uttar Pradesh, nearly 320,000 people are employed at around 506 different khadi organisations, according to KVIC. The first mall will come up in Lucknow, the state capital, he added. According to KVIC, besides designer khadi clothes pandering to contemporary taste the malls will also offer products related to healthcare and beauty care. "Handmade footwear, acupressure tools, edibles ranging from Ayurveda-related health products to pickles, soaps, shampoos, hair oil and other beauty products will all be offered under the same roof," said Pandey. Construction of the khadi malls would start in the next few months. A 15-day exhibition showcasing khadi and other cottage industries products from across the country started here Monday, with 67 organisations displaying their products in nearly 107 stalls. Besides khadi items, articles on display also include silk saris, door blinds, mats and curtains made from natural grass in West Bengal, as well as woollen garments from Kashmir.
