Kolkata: Usha Martin Group, a leading producer of speciality steel and wire rope, has forayed into the education sector with the recently launched Usha Martin Academy here. Promoted by the Usha Martin Group and supported by UshaComm as knowledge partner, the Academy aims to bridge the gap between classroom teaching and real-time industry requirements, said Saugata Banerjee, director, Usha Martin InfoTech. "Recognising that the key to future technological development and economic growth lies with knowledge-based industries, the Academy aims to be a centre for creation, dissemination and application of knowledge in technology and management," he said. With expert faculty from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur, Jadavpur University and the software industry, the Usha Martin Academy has rolled out a carefully designed, six-month intensive programme on information technology. "The stress here is on hands-on experience through carefully designed laboratory exercises and experiments, which will help students beef up their skill sets and make them industry-suitable," Banerjee said. The six-month course module will lay special emphasis on working in live projects, the development of soft skills like business etiquette and communication, foreign language training and client interaction. The Usha Martin Academy will soon introduce a one-year bridge course on IT and IT-related subjects for non-engineering graduates to make them at par with their engineering counterparts. Apart from the Kolkata campus, new centres in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Durgapur and Siliguri are also in the pipeline.
