UID appoints 3 consortia to protect duplication of numbers
New Delhi: The UIDAI has appointed three consortia to make certain that the biometric-based IDs are not duplicated. UIDAI sent an email last week to the winning bidders and a formal contract will be signed this week, report Surabhi Agarwal and Jacob P.Koshy of Mint. The consortia are led by Accenture and Mindtree, along with Mahindra Satyam and Sagem Morpho Security and Hewlett Packard, L-1 Identity Solutions and 4G Identity Solutions. The selected companies will develop and maintain systems to verify and scrutinize every new application by filtering through biometrics database. This will avert accidental or fraudulent duplication of the numbers thereby ensuring each one is unique. While Accenture, MindTree, Mahindra Satyam and Hewlett-Packard are information technology (IT) firms, L-1 Identity, Sagem Morpho and 4G Identity Solutions provide biometric solutions. The contract is worth 300 crore. R.S. Sharma, Director General, UIDAI said, "Biometrics is not a precise mathematical science and can be error-prone. So we are mitigating the risk by appointing multiple vendors for the job."
