Bangalore: The fourth annual Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) India has been commenced in Bangalore on July 21, 2010 at the NIMHANS Convention Centre focusing on the critical issues faced in the embedded software and hardware domain, showcasing new technologies and providing answers to design challenges. The conference was inaugurated by Ashok Kumar Manoli, Principal Secretary IT, Biotechnology, S & T, Karnataka. The three-day long conference has the leading experts in the industry on the speakers' panel and it is definitely a forum where one can learn directly from the experts. The event is organized by UBM India and EE Times Group, a global business media company. Inaugurating the conference, Ashok Kumar Manoli said "there has been much progress in the state in the semi-conductor industry in the last few years. We are proud of the fact that 80 percent of the complete chip design from the country comes from Karnataka. ESC will definitely pave the way for more business opportunities and this is the reflection of the strength of this conference." The Keynote address was given by Ganesh Moorthy, Chief Operating Officer, Microchip Technology on 'Smart Energy - Opportunities in the Emerging Smart Energy Market'. Speaking on the alarming rate of growing global need for energy, Moorthy said apart from building more power generation sources, it is cost and time prohibitive approach that should be given more importance. He stressed on the significance of learning how to use the energy more efficiently, as well as managing energy generation and distribution networks more effectively. He focused his talk mainly on how emerging Smart Grid and Smart Energy applications will shape our future and how future applications can enable global power infrastructures to function more powerfully, efficiently and in an ecologically-responsible fashion. The highlight of the event was the CXO Panel discussion on 'India Design Houses: More of the same?' aimed at senior management and engineers from embedded industry. The discussion revolved around the nature and future of Indian design, how enterprises can move up the design value chain, the untapped areas of design that we can focus on and expectations that MNC companies have from Indian partners to help them tap into new markets and market segments. On the opening day, Clive Maxfield, President, TechBytes, talked on 'Hardware Concepts for Firmware Developers'. The course was mainly based on his book "Bebop to the Boolean Boogie - An Unconventional Guide to Electronics." Later the day, Bob Zeidman, President and Founder, Software Analysis and Forensic Engineering Corporation took a session on - A Crash Course in Verilog covering advantages of Verilog, basic Verilog syntax, modules, coding guidelines etc. The first day also had Kiran Penneru, Michael Barr, Gary Stringham and Serge Plagnol as the key speakers covering various topics in different sessions. The coming two days will cover different topics such as Software Designing for Multicore Systems, Migration from Proprietary RTOS to Carrier Grade Linux in Telecom Equipments, Embedded Linux Deterministic, Hardware-Firmware Interface Design, Real-Time Programming with Windows, Remote Debugging of Embedded Systems, Controller Area Networking, Power over Ethernet and so forth. Project Director, UBM India, Anees Ahmed said, "ESC India has played an instrumental role in bringing Embedded community together as one on a common platform for 3 days to innovate and celebrate excellence in design."
