Techie builds air-car! Refuses commercialization
Bangalore: Kanak Gogoi, a 12th passed entrepreneur from Guwahati, has over a dozen innovations, from gravity-operated bicycle to a car which can run on air. But he regrets the government's negligence towards scientific innovations, and refuses to commercialize any of his creations.

Gogoi said, "Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offered to build a fully furnished lab for me in Guwahati. The Chief Minister had granted me about 1.6 acres of land in 2007, but the file is still lying untouched at the local administrative office."

Talking about slow moving files, another of Gogoi's invention is the speed breaker that can generate electricity simply when vehicles pass over it. Gogoi explains that a ramp under the speed breaker would absorb the static energy produced by the sheer mass of the vehicle and convert it into kinetic energy. This is, in turn, transferred into electricity and stored in a battery cell. A vehicle weighing one tonne can create electricity equivalent to one kilowatt.

When Gogoi started the journey, he had two options; pay up his children's school fees or spend the money for his scientific innovations. He opted for the latter. In the past 13 years, he has spent 1.5 crore (15 million) of his own money to satisfy his scientific and engineering curiosities, but steadfastly refuses to commercialize any of them and blames the government for not promoting scientific innovations, although only a few years ago he was making a hand-to-mouth existence.

Felicitated by the President of India last week for his achievements, 47-year old Gogoi is a celebrity in Guwahati's scientific and engineering circles. He has developed his penchant for creating extraordinary things from ordinary materials used for day-to-day activities during his younger days.

"However, I have never received a single rupee in profit for any of my work and I will never venture to commercialize them on my own. But if anybody is willing, he is free to make use of my innovations for the greater good of the society," Gogoi told PTI.

Among his innovations are a solar hybrid car, whose 320 watt battery is charged by solar panels and is powered by a 100cc engine. Another car that Gogoi made from integration of motorcycle and Maruti 800 engines, runs on air energy powered by a hand glider and can reach a maximum speed of 120 km per hour.

Gogoi, however, has not bothered to apply for intellectual property rights (IPR) for any of his innovations, although they have cost 1.5 crore of his own money. "When anybody talks about things like IPR or patents, it is generally assumed that the person must be a Ph.D or DLitt. Who will think of an undergraduate as a genuine and worthy innovator? Besides, paperwork of the kind that is required for patent filing has always been an anathema for me," said Gogoi.

In fact it is the National Innovation Foundation, headed by noted scientist Raghunath A Mashelkar that applied for a patent on Gogoi's behalf for his gravity operated cycle, which converts gravitational force released by pedaling of the cycle into kinetic energy.

"I have a successful real estate business, which affords me the luxury of having enough spare money and spare time to concentrate on my engineering activities. I don't expect and nor do I wish for any monetary returns," said Gogoi, who had refused an invitation from a North Carolina-based organization to shift to their campus with a daily stipend of $1,000.

usually, it takes years of investment to make a human useful to the society. but, for any reason if the human with draws from the society, due to the behaviour of the few ordinary persons, it is a great loss for total world. may be your inventions may best use the natural unlimited resources like wind, and save the nature from pollution & green house effects. I agree with Peter's opinion (though maybe differently)...Gogoi is a making of his own "ego" - and so are everyone who want to support him by posting like "good-congratulations-we are proud of you" etc etc...if you are literate enough to understand that in India we have to struggle with the demons (political & sarkaari employees) made by our own self - what is the benefit of keeping an ego.

The politically blind and useless government employees have been their for long - and even if a dedicated person like Gogoi is no longer there - they will!

He will never stand a chance before this evil system.

He should go ahead and take care of what he can do in this life - if they do not understand - let the other recognize him.

GOGOI - GO AHEAD AND COMPLETE YOUR ASPIRATIONS..this country does not needs another Bhagat Singh NOW!

Nice to hear that an Indian has made this many achievements. The idea of non commercialization is in one way good. But we can use these inventions for our nations defence and protection force and in the time of calamities. The usage should be safe and productive.

If you are talking about the compressed air car, there is nothing new about it and actually Tata (of India) bought rights from MDI of France and is in the process of making one car that runs on compressed air. The idea invented by MDI is more than 15 years old - where have you been. And the solar-hybrid cars are made by individuals in the US (with little effort)by retrofitting Toyota Prius that gives 250 mpg. (see Popular Mechnics 2005 (?)) This guy, at least on these two fronts, is way behind the world. No wonder he is reluctant to patent.....because he wouldn't get it. Much more sophisticated patents have already been granted to MDI. So relax and ride the wave.

You are right only if he does not want to patent it. It sounds like he is making it available for the "greater good of the society." Then openly display it or publish it and make it available to everybody.

Once he does it, nobody can patent it as it becomes a public knowledge. Most people posting here about some western companies stealing his innovation and patenting it don't even know that once a public knowledge, it can not be patented (I know! I made that mistake of publishing my work and then wanted to patent.....big mistake) So, what is the delay? Something is fishy here.

Many people have come up with really fascinating discoveries, but had no press coverage and bragging rights like yours. Again, THOSE WHO CAN'T, COMPLAIN.

Indians are most gullible people in the world, they can be very easily fooled and manipulated. If anybody doubts this, why not call MIT in Cambridge, MA(you can find ph no. if you Google) and confirm his claims - it is as easy as that.

Your ahcievements reminds me of the ever great Thomas Alva Edison, who had no formal professional educsation. Yet he is the inventor of more than 1300 items of daily use. It is innovative mind and firm commitment that makes a person succeed.
Now I wish the inventions listed are not going to be the end. But I differ with you on not patenting. Numebr of Indian patents on breakthrough technologies are much less compare to even China. If you do not patent, someone else will reinvent the same thing and patent it and may use it commercially. It may reahc a stage when you purchase an itme from them. In other words, you apy for your own inventions. I amnot talking throughmy hat. There are many examples when one had to pay for his own inventions becuase he did not patent and someone else was smarter.
So at least as a protection, you must patent all your inventions. This is my sincere advice.

But if the inventions are worthy of a market, he should market them. If he wants to give it for free, so be it, but contact some greedy industrialist who would like to make the most of it and market it. Let the products hit the market.

Sell the speedbreaker idea to builders who create large scale IT Parks or housing colonies, where they will be creating enough humps and will have sufficient vehicles to produce enough electricity for common purpose at least.

Let us not do just “Government bashing” and sitting ideal. Government is not a different entity –it’s been elected by us for us. Most of elite-class (read - IT savy people) prefer to sit at home instead of going to give votes during elections – so do not think any one of such people deserve to bash government –if you don’t do your duty don’t expect the same from bureaucrats, babus, MLA, mantris.

I would not be surprised if Mr.Kanak Gogoi goes to USA and actually commercializes all his inventions. A Car running on solar power with speed of 120kmph is like huge achievement and big weapon in war against global warming.
I guess he must help and approach for commercialization its not the monetary gains but its help to social cause and help for saving nature.

If the government officials/politicians were sensible enough and really wanted to bring the state to glory, such opportunities would have been utilised to the core to project the state.
