Tatas move into Wireless Technology

Targeting the individuals and home computers users Tata Communication formerly VSNL is planning to enter the new field of Wi-Max technology based broad band services. "We will roll out our Wi-MAX broadband for consumers by the end of this calendar year," says Srinivas Addapali, Vice-President, Strategy, Tata Communication. "We are in the process of rolling out the network in 10-12 cities that include Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai," says Adappali. "A considerable amount of our capital expenditure of Rs 2,250 crore for this year will be earmarked for the WiMAX broadband rollout," he added. BSNL has also recently announced expression of interest to move to Wi-MAX based broadband in rural areas and is expected to launch its services across Indian cities in 2008. Dishnet is another service provider in this field besides Tata and BSNL. Wi-MAX is a new technology that provides high speed wireless Internet access and connects individual homes and business as far as 30 miles with long-range frequencies. The international long distance carrier had commercially rolled out broadband Wi-MAX for corporate customers in Banglore as of May 2006.
