JAIPUR: Tata Power Company Ltd has written to the Rajasthan government expressing interest in setting up a gas power project in the desert state. According to officials in the industry department, the affiliate of the Tata group wants to set up the mega power project in Dholpur. However, he said negotiations were still at a premature stage and the modalities would be only worked out after the company gave a presentation -- likely to be made after the budget session of the state assembly in August. If the project comes through, it would be a big relief for the power deficit state. Though there has been some growth in power generation, Rajasthan still suffers from a gap of over 25 percent between demand and supply. Electricity sales have been growing at an annual average of 11 percent. The total installed capacity in the state by the end of June 2003 was 4,835 MW, of which 2,438 MW was from the state's own sources, 971 MW from shared projects and 1,426 MW from central allocation.
