New York: Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces, a part of the Tata Group under the Indian Hotel Company, Tuesday said it has acquired Campton Place in San Francisco - a 110-room, European style luxury hotel - for $58 million. This is the group's first hotel in East Coast and the third in the country, after the lease entered into in 2005 to operate the The Pierre in New York's Fifth Avenue and full ownership of Taj Boston earlier this year. Taj, which owns and manages a portfolio of 77 hotels worldwide, will enhance the Campton Place's original reputation for quiet elegance, unrivalled service and style, said Raymond Bickson, chief executive of Indian Hotels. "Campton Place defined excellence in the art of hospitality and fine dining in San Francisco for leisure and business travellers when it re-opened in 1984 as the city's first true small luxury hotel," said Bickson. "Our goal is to build its stature further as San Francisco's premier address for discerning travellers and everyone who loves an exceptional dining experience," he added. The hotel has a 98-year heritage and re-opened in 1984 when two buildings that date back to 1909 and 1910 were combined into one. Today, it has 101 rooms, nine suites, a restaurant, bar, fitness centre and broadband access. Indian Hotels also announced a new general manager, Vikram Aditya Singh, for the hotel and said he has previously worked for the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa in the Maldives and Taj Safari Lodges in India. The group said they were planning more such acquisitions in the future, especially in the gateway cities of the US. "Internationally, Taj acquired the 100-room W Hotel in Sydney's central business district 15 months ago and is expanding into China, South Africa and the Middle East," the company said in a statement.
