NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended concessions for accessing the Internet through dial-up connections, providing relief to millions of Internet users faced with a planned hike in fixed-line phone rates. In a statement released late on Wednesday, TRAI said concessional tariff would now be available for 12 hours from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. instead of the earlier eight hours from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. TRAI did not specify a concessional tariff and left it for telecoms firms to decide on the new dial-up rates. It had announced in January that fixed-line call rates would be raised from April 1. Currently, state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, which offers fixed-line phone and Internet access across the country, except for New Delhi and Bombay, charges 1.20 rupees for a six-minute call to access the Internet.
