TN software exports growth fails momentum

CHENNAI:Despite being a hot destination for IT and BPO segments, Tamil Nadu has recorded lower growth than its neighboring states, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, in terms of total software exports for 2004-05. The total software exports from Tamil Nadu has grown to 100 billion for 2004-05, up by 40.50 percent, from 76 billion in 2003-04, according to STPI-Chennai. Karnataka, the leader in software exports, has recorded a 52 percent growth in software exports for 2004-05.Its total software exports has zoomed to 270 billion for 2004-05 from 180 billion in 2003-04. Though the total software exports from India is yet to be officially announced, Karnataka’s share is expected to be around 35 percent. The performance of the software industry in Andhra Pradesh has also shown a growth of 64.5 percent reaching 82.7 billion for 2004-05, according to STPI-Hyderabad. While looking at the performance of secondary cities, these cities in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have also reported higher growth in software exports. In Karnataka, STPI-Mysore has reported a growth of 72 percent in software exports to 3.09 billion for 2004-05 and STPI-Mangalore/Manipal’s software exports has increased to 5.67 billion from 4.56 billion. In Andhra Pradesh, cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada have reported 100 percent growth in exports. These two cities have exported 700 million and 240 million of software respectively for 2004-05. In Tamil Nadu, tier-2 cities like Coimbatore contributed about 490 million to the total exports of the state. During 2003-04, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli alone contributed about 590 million. The top 10 companies in Tamil Nadu have contributed about 70 percent to the total software exports of the state. In Karnataka, top 10 firms accounted for 50 percent of the exports.
