SEOUL: Enterprise software major Sybase Inc., too has fallen for the Indian software charm finally. It will set up a software development center in Pune in the next few months with an investment of nearly $ 8 million (Rs 40 crore). "We have already signed a lease agreement for a facility and the interior decoration and other related works are now on," revealed Sybase Chairman, President and CEO John Chen in an exclusive chat with CyberMedia News Service. Chen is here in Seoul to attend the Sybase Asia Pacific User Conference. The $800-million Sybase is based in Dublin, California. When the facility becomes fully operational in the next 12-18 months, it will have about 250 professionals developing some of the cutting edge software products, which are sold worldwide by the company. The center is likely to execute the development work related to professional services, a senior Sybase official said. Currently, Sybase India Ltd operates as a branch office out of Mumbai to handle sales, marketing and technical support work. The Chatterjee Group (TCG) has been doing some software development work out of its Kolkata facility for Sybase since 1991. From a high of about 45, this facility now has some 20 people working on Sybase products. This is likely to be integrated into the Pune facility. Sybase is in the process of looking for a country manager and also recruiting software programmers. "The India facility will not be a software localization operation but a full-fledged development center," said CEO Chen. " We have not looked at India on the basis of costs as many others have done, but for the value addition possible by the local talent," he said when asked about the delay in moving into India. Sybase has been operating full fledged, software development facilities outside the US in Singapore, Paris and Beijing. Even its software support centers across the world use the "follow the Sun" policy and provide seamless service to customers from the facility nearest to their location. (SOURCE: CIOL)
