Sun commits $5 M for Indian academic initiative

NEW DELHI: Sun Microsystems has committed $5 million to push its academic initiative in India. "Our latest matching grant program will allow educational institutions to purchase selected items at Standard Education Prices and qualify for second identical unit free," Dinesh Bahal, Regional Director - International (Education and Research) at Sun Microsystems said. "The company will spend $5 million on the matching grant program that will run till the middle of June. All degree granting institutions will be eligible for it," he said. India is one of the few markets where this program will run. Earlier, under the academic initiative program Sun was providing software and course material free to academic institutions. "Sun is growing at the rate of 52 percent year-on-year in India and our target is to grow at double the industry rate," K P Unnikrishnan Managing Director (Marketing), Sun Microsystems India said. "The company's development center in India has grown up to 1,000 people. We are adding anywhere between 200-250 people in India annually," he said adding, "our India Engineering Center is working only in creating new intellectual property. Nothing has been outsourced to India."
