New Jersey: Sohail Mohammed, an Indian American defense attorney has been nominated to serve in a Superior Court judgeship in New Jersey. 47 years old Mohammed was nominated by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, along with six other nominees for Superior Court judgeships. Mohammed, who defended more than 30 detainees after 9/11, will serve in Superior Court in Passaic County. If his nomination is confirmed, Mohammed would be the first Indian-American judge and the second Muslim judge in New Jersey after Hany Mawla, who was confirmed to the bench in Somerset County last January. Mohammed was also fielded as a potential judicial appointee by the former New Jersey governor Jon Corzine. However, Corzine never nominated him. A board member of the American Muslim Union and an executive board member of the New Jersey Bar Association, Mohammed was named in 2009 by New Jersey Monthly magazine as one of the 101 most influential people in the state.
