Services sector fuels Indian economic growth

India's booming services sector continued its steady growth in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal year, boosting the overall economy, said a survey report Sunday.

NEW DELHI: According to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) survey, cellular phones, construction industry and hotel industry helped the services sector to post an impressive growth in the April-June quarter over a year-ago period. The cellular phone services sector registered a subscriber growth rate of 115 percent in the quarter ended June 30, 2003, over the same period in the last fiscal year, said the survey. "The present growth rate is expected to continue over the next few months," said the CII report. Sanctions of home loans registered a 35 percent growth while disbursements registered a growth of 34 percent in April-June 2003 over the same period in fiscal 2002-03. "The outlook for the next six months is positive and growth for both sanctions and disbursements are expected to be more than 35 percent," said the survey. The tourism industry also maintained a high growth with tourist arrivals increasing by 12 percent in the quarter ended June 30, 2003, over the last corresponding period. "The industry rallied forcefully after the Iraq war and tourist arrivals are expected to rise up to 15-20 percent more in the next six months. Occupancy in hotels is also expected to grow by 15-20 percent in the coming months." The IT industry also maintained a high growth trend. Turnover in hardware registered a growth of 16 percent while it was 12 percent during the last year, the survey said. Sale of personal computers and software recorded a growth of 12 percent and 20 percent respectively.
