NEW DELHI: Scooters are back in style and how! In a latest survey conducted by TNS, women lead the way at the scooter satisfaction index recording them as more satisfied than men with their automobiles. The women were ahead of men with eight points in the customer satisfaction index according to the survey that marked all other aspects of brand image, cost ownership, quality index and design among others. The survey also brought to light the rising popularity of scooters over the much more “macho” motorcycles. Findings showed that scooter owners were more affluent than motorcycle owners, contrary to popular beliefs. While 31 percent motorcycle owners recorded their monthly income at 10, 000, 19 percent of the scoter owners fell into the category and 11 percent recorded their income at 30, 000 per month. With a sample size of about 2,000 people, 80 percent of the 688 women reported scooters to be their first vehicles. Under the same light, a recent report showed that with rising price of fuel, U.S citizens were opting for the mileage friendly scooter rather than a car. In a country where almost every family owns a car as a means of basic transport, the scooter is yet to turn familiar, but it is catching on soon. According to industry reports, 113,000 scooters were sold in 20045, up 18 percent from the year before. With price of fuels going up by the minute and the scooter having an effective mileage of nearly 40 kilometers per liter as compared to the measly 16-17 churned out by a car, this just might be the much needed answer to fuel conservation.
