BANGALORE: Sasken Communications Technologies, the Bangalore-based solutions provider for mobile handsets, semiconductors and network equipment, has posted a 52% increase in revenues for the year ended March 31, ’04, at Rs 166.1 crore, compared with Rs 109.2 crore in the previous year. The company, in which Intel Capital and Citigroup hold stakes, made a net profit of Rs 18.3 crore for the year as against Rs 12.7 crore in the previous year. Rajiv Mody, chairman and chief executive officer of Sasken Communications, told ET, “After the recent downturn, this was a very good year. The current year should be even better.” The company nearly doubled its headcount, from 851 to 1,437 people during ’03-04. By the end of the current year, some 2,000 people should be on the payrolls, said Mr Mody. Sasken’s revenues from the products business constitutes 26% of its total revenues. The product business includes product licensing, customisation and royalties. “From the DSL modem stack that we developed some years ago and which are installed in 400,000 places across the world, we are getting more and more royalties. The market is still expanding. This year, royalties from other IP solutions should also start coming in,” said Mr Mody. Sasken’s services business too has grown, at 21% quarter on quarter, and it is growing in all segments: mobile handsets, semiconductors as well as network equipment. The company will continue to invest more aggressively in R&D this year, said Mr Mody. Of the 43 patent applications filed so far, the company has been awarded two. However, benefits from these should start accruing only after five years or so, said Mr Mody. Among Sasken’s top customers are Nortel Networks, NTT DoCoMO and Texas Instruments. Sasken’s subsidiary, Sasken Network Systems, provides consulting and engineering services for service providers and network system vendors.
