BHUBANESWAR: A 40 billion alumina refinery project being set up in Orissa will be operational in three years. Sterlite Industries (SIL) is going to set up the alumina refinery complex at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district, a company official here said. SIL chairmen Anil Agrawal signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government on the project Saturday. Agrawal told mediapersons that the project includes an alumina refinery with a million-tonne-per-annum capacity, a three-million-tonne-per-annum bauxite mining facility and a 100-mega watt (MW) captive power plant. The bauxite mine will start operating within 24 to 30 months. The alumina refinery plant would be operational in three years. The company has already completed the groundwork, including environmental impact assessment and identification of land, an industry department official told IANS. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is laying the foundation of the project, he said. The state government has asked the state-run Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation to facilitate land acquisition and other requirements. SIL needs 1,073 hectares of area containing bauxite and 720 hectares of land to set up the plant. Most of the land has already been acquired, the official said. The plant and the mines would displace 60 families, but the company plans to build houses for rehabilitation, he said. The plant is expected to provide direct employment to about 1,000 people and indirect employment to about 3,000 people.
