CHANDIGARH: A state power department official said Wednesday the plant would be set up by BSES Limited, a Reliance Group company. The project was finalised after BSES Limited chairman Satish Seth met Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala. Chautala told Seth the company's retail power tariff should be competitive to benefit consumers. The official said an investment of 1,200 billion would initially be made in generation and transmission of power, and this would increase to 1,400 billion in the next three to four years. Gas for the project would be brought to Haryana by Reliance and there would be a regulator for the gas, which would also decide power tariff. The power plant would not only help Haryana in meeting its growing demand for power due to rapid industrialisation, but also feed neighbouring states. The project is also expected to generate employment for a large number of people. The official said BSES had urged the state government to allot about 1,000 hectares to 2,500 hectares of land and provide assured water supply of 150 million litres a day to enable it to set up the project. The risk of revenue collection would be assumed by BSES and the company had offered to join hands with state power utilities to set up a joint venture. The official said Seth urged the state government to declare power a high priority area and to provide certain fiscal exemptions for smooth functioning of the project.
