RIM to exchange corporate emails with Indian government
New Delhi: The Indian government and Research In Motion (RIM) are negotiating with each other for the monitoring and access of highly encrypted BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) that allows the exchange of secure corporate emails among BlackBerry phone users. Indian Interior ministry and the Intelligence agency of the Indian government had a series of meetings with RIM executives to work out the sharing of the recorded data. "They have in principle agreed to provide us recorded data from their servers," said an interior ministry official. The officials have a set across norms and demands that the RIM has to follow in the scenario of sharing the information. RIM has assured the government that they will discuss the issue first among themselves and find a way to meet their demands. After which Blackberry will give complete live access of their servers to the Intelligence agency. India, among several other countries expressed concerns about BlackBerry services which could be used to stir up political or social instability. It had initially threatened RIM with a ban if they were denied access to its highly-secure Messenger and corporate email communications. Late last month, the Indian government said RIM had set up an interim arrangement for lawful interception of BlackBerry Messenger services and had assured to provide a final solution by the end of January, while a government source had said talks were on over access to corporate emails.
