Quark starts new venture in India

CHANDIGARH: United States-based software giant Quark, coming up with a high-tech business and technology workplace near here, has said outsourcing is "good" for America and the world. Quark chairman Fred Ebrahimi Tuesday described the anti-outsourcing movement in the US as "stupid". He said the outcome of the US presidential elections in November would also have a bearing on the outsourcing controversy. "The Republicans are generally not against outsourcing but the Democrats are. If the Democrats come to power, it would affect jobs in India and elsewhere," Ebrahimi said. He said it would be "unrealistic" for Americans to be selling aeroplanes to India and not accept outsourcing of jobs. Ebrahimi was at the Quark City complex at Mohali town, 10 km from here, being built as a hi-tech business and technology workplace with modern amenities for private sector companies. The $500 million Quark venture in India was formally launched by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. This is the second Quark facility in India, with the first one also at Mohali. The Quark City complex is to be completed in three years with 2.8 million sq ft income generating space. It would over 25,000 direct jobs in the knowledge-based sector and another 100,000 jobs indirectly. Ebrahimi said his company had an "elaborate water and power conservation plan". Sehgal said that several companies had shown interest in setting up offices in the 51-acre Quark City. Quark aims to get a platinum level LEED certification from the United States Green Building Council. Only six buildings in the world, which have LEED certification, are in the platinum grade.
