Dubai: A Qatari national has paid $3,761,570 (13.7 million Qatari riyals) for a car licence plate, according to a newspaper report. Arabic newspaper Al Sharq has reported that the Qatari paid the amount at an auction to own the 55555 license plate. The bidding took place on Sunday evening and started from $1.1 million (4 million riyals). The newspaper, however, did not name the person. Paying astronomical sums for a unique number plate is not new to the region. A UAE businessman, Saeed Abdul Ghafour Khouri, paid $14.3 million (52.2 million dirhams) in 2008 for an Abu Dhabi license plate labeled '1' at an auction, making it the world's most expensive licence plate.
