Bangalore: Many of the Indian childless couples settled abroad seek information on adopting children from the Shishu Griha in Jaipur. But the organization is not recognized by the Central Adoption Regulatory Authority (CARA) to permit adoption of child by NRI couples.

Recently, a proposal has been forwarded by the Ministry of social justice department which will allow childless NRI couples to adopt child from Shishu Griha. The department has also made recommendations to the CARA to make Shishu Griha an International Adoption Agency.

Shishu Griha would be the only children’s home in the state of Rajasthan offering child adoption to NRI parents, if the proposal gets approved by CARA. An executive in the department of social justice said that they are waiting for CARA’s approval. "While there are states like Gujarat and Karnataka which have many international adoption agencies, Rajasthan does not have any as of now,’’ he said.

Reena Sharma, the superintendent of Shishu Griha said that many NRI’s call up the organization frequently asking for details regarding adoption of child. . "There are five to six calls by NRIs every year. Relatives of NRIs living in Rajasthan also call us regarding adoption of a child, but we tell them to contact CARA," Sharma said.

Santosh Aggarwal, a member of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) at Jaipur described the step as a positive approach. "Children will find good homes abroad. Why should we depend on domestic adoption only? If well-to-do people living abroad want to adopt children from their own country it is a welcome move," she said.
