Over 16 Million new mobile users in October
New Delhi: With more than 16 million new mobile users in October, the number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 525.65 million. Along with this, the overall tele-density reached 44.87 percent, according to numbers released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). In the wireless segment, the subscriber base increased from 471.73 million in September to 488.40 million in October at a monthly growth rate of 3.53 percent. The growth is primarily due to steep reduction in tariffs as operators launched per second billing across the country. Also, the total broadband subscriber base increased from 7.22 million to 7.40 million, a growth of 2.49 percent. The upcoming auction of 3G and broadband spectrum is expected to give a boost to the broadband uptake in the country. However, the wireline or landline subscriber base declined from 37.31 million in September to 37.25 million in October as consumers prefer the convenience of taking a mobile connection.
