Only 2.74 Mn Mobile Users Added in Nov: Trai

New Delhi: Telecom operators in the country registered a net addition of 2.74 million mobile subscribers in November last year, taking the total number of telecom users in the country to 917.33 million, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said.

According to the data released by Trai, mobile subscriber base in the country increased to 884.37 million in November-end from 881.4 million in the preceding month, a growth of 0.34%.

Telecom operators had added 7.79 million mobile subscribers in October.

With this, the overall teledensity (telephones per 100 people) in India reached 76.18% at November-end.

The number of active mobile subscribers, according to the visitor location register (VLR) data, during November was 635.39 million.

VLR numbers provide details on active customers at any given point of time, excluding switched-off and out-of-the-coverage area customers.

The growth in the wireless category was led by Idea Cellular, which added 2.17 million new users, taking its subscriber base to 10.39 million by the end of November.

Tata Teleservices lost 4.44 million and its subscriber base stood at 83.39 million.

Country's largest private operator Bharti Airtel added 0.96 million subscribers, taking its user base to 174.69 million. Vodafone added 0.92 million new customers to take its user base to 146.84 million.

Uninor added 1.86 million new users, taking its subscriber base to 34.18 million. Aircel added 0.67 million users during the period, taking its subscriber base to 60.95 million.

RCom added 1.01 million new subscribers to take its user base to 149.13 million, while SSTL added 0.47 million new users to take its total userbase to 14.49 million.

State-run telcos BSNL lost 0.18 million users at the end of November, however, MTNL added 31,787 during the period under review. The subscriber base of BSNL stood at 96.01 million and of MTNL's at 5.64 million, respectively.

About 2.671 million subscribers submitted request for MNP in November 2011. Since the introduction of MNP in November, 2010, about 25.837 million subscribers across the country had submitted requests, till November, for changing their service providers while retaining their mobile numbers.

In MNP Zone-I (Northern and Western India), maximum number of requests have been received in Gujarat (2.486 million), followed by Maharashtra (2.1 million).

In MNP Zone-II (Southern and Eastern India), maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka Service area (2.291 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh (2.271 million).

Wireline category subscriber base declined to 32.96 million in November from 33.19 million in October, Trai said. Broadband subscription reached 13.13 million in the reported month from 12.98 million in October.
