New Delhi: Recording the highest growth over the last eight years, global mobile PC shipments jumped 43.4 per cent to 49.4 million units in the January-March quarter this year, research agency Gartner said. Driven by the consumer segment, this year-over-year growth of 43.4 per cent is the highest that the mobile PC market has experienced in eight years and represents about USD 36 billion in end-user spending, Gartner said in a statement. There was an uptake in the professional segment too and Gartner expects to see higher growth in the professional market towards the end of 2010 and into 2011 as part of a larger refresh cycle. "Mini-notebook PCs were a big part of the bump in mobile PC shipments in the first quarter of 2010, with shipments growing 71 per cent over the same period last year," Gartner Principal Analyst Mikako Kitagawa said. "However, mini-notebooks' share slowed in some regions as consumers begin to understand the limitations of mini-notebooks, especially in the face of aggressive price cuts of regular notebooks," Kitagawa added. HP continued to be the No1 vendor in worldwide mobile PC shipments, accounting for 19.2 per cent of shipments in Q1 2010 with 9.4 million units. Acer and Dell had market shares of 18.5 per cent (9.1 million units) and 11.5 per cent (5.6 million units) respectively. "The average selling price (ASP) of mobile PCs was USD 732 in the first quarter of 2010, a 15.7 per cent decline from the first quarter of 2009, when the ASP was USD 868," Kitagawa said. She added that the ASP for mobile PCs is expected to stabilise as the professional market grows, resulting in slightly higher ASPs compared to consumer mobile PCs. Gartner estimates that there are about 500 million mobile PCs currently in use worldwide.
